Thanks to this research, it has been demonstrated how small design improvements can lead to significant reductions in energy consumption and greater thermal uniformity of the product.

Publishing these results in a prestigious scientific journal implies that the study has undergone a demanding evaluation process by independent experts, consolidating GLS not only as a user of technology, but also as a generator of new knowledge, strengthening its credibility among companies, public administrations, and competitive R&D programs.

The ALIMPACK project was launched within the Navarra Agri-Food Cluster (NAGRIFOOD) with the aim of developing sustainable packaging solutions based on recycled and recyclable cardboard for the fruit and vegetable, meat, and aquaculture sectors. These solutions seek to provide sustainably packaged food that preserves its organoleptic, functional, and nutritional properties throughout its shelf life, while minimizing food waste.

The Navarra Agri-Food Cluster (NAGRIFOOD) organized the first meeting of the strategic ALIMPACK project together with all the consortium partners. In this project, the development of nanotechnological coatings (breathable, non-film-forming, and inert) will make it possible to provide cardboard with different structural and functional properties—on the one hand, for the harvesting and transport of food in the fruit, vegetable, and aquaculture sectors, and on the other, for the display, preparation, and consumption of food in the aquaculture and meat sectors.

In addition to NAGRIFOOD as the coordinating entity, the project includes the Lurederra Technological Center (LUREDERRA) as the knowledge hub, and two business R&D&I units—Solidus Innova (INNOVA) and Global and Local Solutions, S.L.U. (GLS)—as leaders in applied research. They are joined by five agri-food sector entities that represent all links in the value chain: AN S. Coop. (GRUPO AN), Caviar Pirinea (PIRINEA), Huerta de Peralta S.A.T. 413 (EL HUERTICO), Exposición y Conservación de Alimentos S.A. (EXKAL), and Solidus Solutions Videcart (VIDECART).

ALIMPACK will be developed over a period of two and a half years within the framework of the 2025–2028 Strategic R&D Project Grants call of the Government of Navarra, co-financed at 40% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Navarra 2021–2027 Operational Programme.

In a recent interview, Daniel Antoñanzas, Managing Director of EXKAL, emphasized that the company seeks to incorporate young individuals with curiosity, a desire to learn, willingness to make mistakes and grow, and the ability to contribute value. In this context, Daniel Antoñanzas, Managing Director of EXKAL, shared the inspiring journey of EXKAL, highlighting its growth, commitment to sustainability and innovation, and the social impact that has made it a reference in the sector.

During his speech, he emphasized EXKAL’s evolution since its founding in 2005 as a small company in Navarre with a team of five people committed to “maximizing added value for customers and building a better world.” Since then, EXKAL has grown significantly and today is a leader in the commercial refrigeration and thermodynamic solutions sector, reaching a global turnover of more than €250 million in 2023 and employing over 1,600 families.

Among the key milestones, he mentioned:

• Global Expansion: EXKAL has seven industrial plants in Europe, one in China, and another in America, as well as 12 commercial subsidiaries across three continents.
• Commitment to Innovation: The company has developed a dual vocational training school, its own technology center, and projects focused on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and energy sustainability, such as thermal batteries for supermarkets with the goal of achieving “zero emissions” by 2040.
• Sustainability: EXKAL’s solutions reduce electricity consumption by 80% and aim to minimize food waste, participating in projects that extend the shelf life of fresh products such as fish and fruits.
• Collaboration and Solidarity: He highlighted the rapid reconstruction of supermarkets after the Valencia DANA storm, thanks to the collaboration of more than 200 SMEs, allowing affected communities to regain access to essential goods.

Finally, he emphasized that the key to EXKAL’s success lies in putting people at the center, empowering them, and fostering teamwork to contribute to a better world. With this philosophy, EXKAL has been recognized as a CEPYME500 company five times, solidifying its position as a model of innovation, sustainability, and social commitment.

The panel in charge of evaluating the proposals was made up of professionals from the Public University of Navarra, Magotteaux and Veridas, who evaluated the creativity, viability and innovation of each of the projects presented. The winning teams received prizes worth a total of €2,500, and all participants had the opportunity to work directly with companies in the𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀, providing them with a unique experience of collaboration and innovation.
